The Opportunity

We are looking for a Mid-Level Software Engineer with 3–6 years of experience to join the company's 5-person engineering team and own full-stack features that impact 200k+ learners across 180+ countries. Founded by Sal Khan, the company is a peer-to-peer learning platform focused on preserving the human side of education — connecting students globally through tutoring, dialogues, and community. We need product-minded engineers who can wear multiple hats, work directly with non-technical stakeholders, and turn ambiguous user problems into elegant solutions. If you want your code to genuinely help people in a world that increasingly needs human connection, this is the role for you.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Own full-stack features end-to-end — from understanding user problems with stakeholders, to scoping work, writing tech specs, building, and iterating based on feedback.
  • Work in small pods alongside engineers, designers, and program leads to stand up new program pilots and learning experiences on the platform.
  • Contribute product ideas and make technical tradeoff decisions with support from senior teammates — you're expected to think beyond just the code.
  • Write clean, maintainable code across the stack (TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, Postgres) and participate in code reviews to keep quality high.
  • Participate in on-call rotations (~1 week every 5–7 weeks) and help streamline platform operations and safety tooling.

Why This Role

  • Mission With Reach: Free peer-to-peer tutoring and Dialogues for 200k+ learners across 180+ countries, founded by Sal Khan. Your code directly helps people learn and connect.
  • Small Team, Big Ownership: A 5-person engineering team on a 15-person org — you own features end to end, from user problem and spec through build and iteration, in pods with designers and program leads.
  • Modern Stack, Real Users: TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node and Postgres on AWS/GCP, serving a global B2C platform with real-time tutoring, matching and trust-and-safety needs.
  • Human-Centered Culture: Sincerity, empathy and learning-at-heart; engineers stay close to end users and non-technical stakeholders. Stable nonprofit funding (donors, foundations, College Board partnership).

Key Requirements

  • Shipped full-stack B2C features to thousands of users
  • Experience with typed languages and relational databases
  • 3 - 6 years of full-stack software engineering experience
  • Experience at a small, high-growth consumer startup
  • TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, Postgres or similar stack
  • Genuine interest in social impact and/or education-focused mission
  • Able to define user problems, write specs, and work directly with non-technical users and senior engineers, to deliver product solutions

Nice to Have

  • Experience in ed-tech, marketplaces, real-time or video products, or trust and safety features
  • AWS or GCP cloud infrastructure experience

Interview Process

  1. Product Thinking & Technical Screen with Evan, Head of Product (45 minutes) — A case-style interview focused on product thinking, with some technical screening. Candidates work through a product case and demonstrate their ability to discuss technical details and trade-offs.
  2. Programming Interview (1 hour) — A live coding session where the candidate fixes bugs and implements features on a toy repository. Evaluates hands-on coding ability, code quality, problem-solving approach, and familiarity with full-stack development patterns. Conducted by a member of the company engineering team.
  3. Systems Design Interview (1 hour) — The candidate works through a systems design problem, assessing their ability to architect solutions and reason about trade-offs.
  4. Culture Fit Call with Non-Technical Team Members (45 minutes) — A culture and values alignment conversation with non-technical team members. Reference checks are conducted in parallel at this stage and are used as an evaluative step (not just a checkbox) to inform the final offer decision.

Application Questions

  1. Why do you think they'd be a great fit?
  2. Walk us through a full-stack project you owned end-to-end: the user problem, roughly how many users, the hardest technical problem you hit (e.g., data model, performance, real-time), the tradeoff you chose, and the outcome
  3. What draws you to working at a mission-driven nonprofit like the company? Why does this kind of work matter to you right now?
  4. Are you able to work within a US timezone? Our meetings happen in US Pacific Time mornings.
